Shirley Joan Martin, 78, 523 Boone Station Rd., Gray, went to her Heavenly home on Tuesday, August 26, 2014, at Holston Valley Medical Center.
Joan was a native of Tipton Hill. NC, and had been a resident of Washington County for most of her life.
She was a daughter of the late Clifford T. and Bertha Parker Tipton. Joan retired from Citi Group, where she was a Customer Service Specialist. She was formerly employed with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, where she worked under J. Edgar Hoover, and while employed with the F.B.I., was a member of it’s championship bowling team. She was a member of Buffalo Ridge Baptist Church, where she taught the 5 year olds Sunday school class for more than thirty years. Joan loved her church, and used every opportunity to promote it, especially to children, volunteering to pick them up to take them to and from church whenever she could. She loved gardening, both vegetables and flowers, and always looked forward to go shopping with her sister-in-law, Betty Martin. In addition to her parents, Joan was preceded in death by a grandson, Elijsha Martin. She is survived by her husband of fifty-five years, Joe Martin; three children, Janie Martin Byrd, Michael Joe Martin, both of Gray, Keith Martin and wife Angie, Franklin; two sisters, Peggy Davis and husband Curtis, Memphis, Sue Hodge and husband Lynn, Knoxville; five grandchildren, Jason Smith, Candace Cox and husband Justin, Shelley Martin, Isaiah Martin and Ashton Martin; two great-grandchildren, Clayton and Cody Cox; several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held Friday, August 29, 2014, at 8:00 P.M., from the East Chapel of the Appalachian Funeral Home, with Dr. Gene Lasley and Dr. Jody Jenkins officiating. Special music will be provided by Nola Sprinkle and Jon Shell. The family will receive friends Friday prior to the service from 6:00-8:00 P.M. in the East Parlor of the funeral home, and other times at the residence. The graveside committal service will be held Saturday at 11:00 A.M. in Washington County Memory Gardens. Active pallbearers will be James Carmichael, Lawrence Crouch, Jeff Hodge, Ron Hodge, David Slonaker and Randy Sprinkle. Honorary pallbearers will be Ward Fore, Jack Mosier, Mike Sokal and Harry Vickers. |
